Teen Parents Give Students a Hefty Dose of Reality

While it is agreed that high school students need to be educated as to the dangers of unprotected sex, for the last twenty years or so the schools have been using the risk of disease and pregnancy as the defining scare tactic to stop young people from having sex, and for the most part, it hasn't really been working, according to reports by a New York Family Attorney.

Despite the fact that we continue to pump kids full of information and fear in regards to the risk of unplanned sex and irresponsible behavior, the teen birth rate is still 41.5 out of every 1000 births, far higher than other developed nations, reports the New York Family Lawyer. Instead of using disease and pregnancy as the fear factor, however, many schools across the country are adopting curriculum programs that give their high school students another type of reality check, and this one seems to be catching the emotions and the understanding of the young people whom it addresses.

The programs consist mainly of real, financially bound, teen parents who come in and tell their stories and their struggles to the class, according to the New York Family Lawyer. Young people don't realize that having a child is so much more expensive, emotionally, financially. We have one shot to make it as a parent in this world and when we come at it completely blindsided and unprepared, it is like an avalanche whose effects ripple out farther than we would assume.

These brutally honest programs seem to be having an effect upon young people who were interviewed about them. Many teens were surprised at just how many aspects of life an unplanned pregnancy could alter, which is precisely the point.

Lesbian Woman Gets Custody of Child

Lesbians, children, abduction, a turn to the Lord, and kidnapping - it sounds like the plot of a movie but it is real life. A Vermont judge has given full custody of a child to a lesbian woman. The problem is the woman doesn't have physical custody of the child, said a New York Family Lawyer. The entire tale began several years ago. Two women were entered into a civil union in Vermont. They loved one another and then adopted a child together. Everything was OK until they divorced. The reason? One of the women decided she was now straight, renounced homosexuality, and became a born again Evangelical Christian. She was awarded custody of the child, with the understanding that the still-gay Lesbian woman retain visitation rights, said a New York Family Lawyer. The now straight, but once gay, woman ran off with the child and refused her former lover and still gay woman any visitation with the child. The straight woman had no legal authority to deny the gay woman visitation rights, said a judge to a New York Family Lawyer.

This issue mirrors the struggle that many men have faced for years, where a woman is give custody of a child and decides she and she alone knows what is best for the kid. But, this is the real world and the court's orders will be obeyed. For now, the former gay now straight woman will have the child but as soon as she is found the child will be turned over to the former gay and still gay woman.

Jesse James Maintains Custody of Child

In what must surely come as a shock to one and all - a surprise on the level of the Trojan horse itself - Jesse James (the ex husband of Oscar Winning Actress, and America's sweetheart, Sandra Bullock) had to stop his other ex-wife from having any contact with their children, said a New York Family Lawyer. James' other ex-wife is also an actress: an adult film star with numerous pornographic film credits to her name. James claims that the woman threatened to abduct the child. That was too much for James to handle and he cut off her court ordered visitation rights, reports a New York Family Lawyer. However, the two sides have since worked out a temporary deal where upon the woman would have a temporary visitation plan. The two sides will then meet again in court in a month to work out a more substantial and lasting plan, notes a New York Family Lawyer.

The two had a previous plan in place but it was modified by the court after the ex-wife/porn star was arrested on tax evasion charges and sentenced to jail, says a New York Family Lawyer.

James had a rather public breakup with Bullock after she believed he was unfaithful to her. He has since been romantically linked to tattoo artist Kat Von D, who stars on a reality show.

The ex-wife and porn star had sent an EMail to James' relatives begging them to help her abscond with the child, reports a New York Family Lawyer. She wanted to run away and spend the rest of her life with the child. James claims that the porn star has been harassing him and his family and everyone else she can and is unstable, says a New York Family Lawyer. He says that she has been contacting the child's school in an effort to cause a scene.

Collections Confuse Estate Planning says a NY Family Lawyer

Collectors and their families often underestimate the value of those collections, according to a New York Family Lawyer.
Many times, someone will have a collection and instruct their children to take it when they die, so the IRS doesn’t get hold of it. Unfortunately for the family, the IRS will notice the extra income once the items are sold. If these are especially valuable (like more than $10,000), there had better be some really good accompanying paperwork to avoid some heavy taxes and/or fees.
Some of these collections cannot be split, so if there are four kids, it’s not likely they can equally split up certain things like paintings or expensive books, which means selling them at an auction. This can sometimes gain as little as 30 cents on the dollar, once taxes are subtracted, reports a New York Family Lawyer.
There is no federal estate tax to worry about in 2010, but it may very well come back in 2011. One way to get around this might be life insurance. Some life insurance policies will pay the costs of the taxes, leaving loved ones free to get the full inheritance.
New York Family Lawyers recommend, at the very least, careful documentation of each item in the collection, including its value and history, to catch the interest of investors.
